Reddit has taken a significant step in enhancing its platform's search capabilities by integrating Google Gemini into its conversational AI tool, Reddit Answers. This upgrade follows Reddit's broader collaboration with Google Cloud, which began over a year ago when they started using the Vertex AI platform to develop AI agents.
The announcement made on Wednesday detailed how the integration of Gemini on Vertex AI would boost the relevance of search results and speed up the delivery of answers to users. Reddit Answers, which has been in beta testing since December 2024, enables users to pose questions and receive curated summaries from relevant comments and existing posts within the platform.
The primary goal of this feature is to enhance user retention by providing quick and relevant answers directly on Reddit, rather than driving users to external search engines like Google. With Gemini's integration, Reddit aims to sharpen its competitive edge against companies like OpenAI, which use Reddit's data to train their own AI chatbots.
User feedback on Reddit Answers has been varied. Some have dismissed it as a less sophisticated version of Grok AI, a tool from X that has occasionally disseminated incorrect information. On the other hand, many appreciate its ability to offer a succinct summary of general advice and insights shared by the community. For instance, it's handy for topics like "how to clean rusty cast iron."
Currently, Reddit Answers is accessible in English on the web and iOS devices in the U.S., making it easier for users to tap into the collective knowledge of the Reddit community more efficiently.
