Anthropic Faces Reddit Lawsuit Over Unpaid AI Training Data

According to a lawsuit filed in a Northern California court on Wednesday, Reddit is taking legal action against Anthropic. The social media company alleges that the AI startup used its platform's content to train artificial intelligence systems without a proper licensing agreement. Reddit contends in the legal filing that Anthropic's commercial use of this data was unauthorized and unlawful, and that it violated Reddit's user terms.

This lawsuit marks a significant development, as Reddit becomes the first major tech firm to legally confront an AI model provider over its data training methods. It joins a growing list of publishers who have initiated similar legal proceedings against technology companies.

In related cases, The New York Times has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft for using its news articles to train AI models without consent or compensation. Separately, author Sarah Silverman and other writers have sued Meta for training its AI on their books without approval. The music industry has also seen publishers and artists bringing comparable claims against AI companies specializing in audio, video, and image generation, alleging unauthorized use of their creative works.

"We cannot allow companies like Anthropic to exploit Reddit's content for massive commercial gain, without providing any value back to our community or respecting user privacy," stated Ben Lee, Reddit's Chief Legal Officer, in a communication to TechCrunch.

It is noteworthy that Reddit has established formal agreements with other AI companies, including OpenAI and Google. These licenses permit the firms to utilize Reddit's data for AI training and to feature Reddit posts within their AI chatbot responses. Reddit's legal filing emphasizes that these partnerships with OpenAI and Google operate under specific conditions designed to safeguard user interests and privacy.

Adding a layer of complexity, OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, holds a significant 8.7% ownership stake in Reddit, positioning him as the company's third-largest shareholder. He also previously served on Reddit's board of directors.

The legal complaint states that Reddit contacted Anthropic to clarify that the startup did not have permission to collect or use Reddit's content. Reddit alleges that Anthropic "refused to engage" in meaningful discussions on the matter.

"We fundamentally disagree with the allegations made by Reddit and will mount a robust defense," said Danielle Ghighlieri, an Anthropic spokesperson, in an emailed statement to TechCrunch.

Reddit's lawsuit further claims that Anthropic's automated web crawlers disregarded the social platform's robots.txt files, which are standard instructions that tell automated bots not to access a website. The platform alleges that even after Anthropic said it would stop its bots from scraping Reddit in 2024, the scraping activities continued, occurring over 100,000 times.

Reddit is seeking monetary compensation for damages, as well as restitution for the value Anthropic allegedly gained by using Reddit's content. The company is also requesting a court order to prevent Anthropic from any further use of its content.

Interesting case! This lawsuit could set a major precedent for how AI companies source their training data. If Reddit wins, will other platforms follow suit and start charging for access to their user-generated content? The whole 'fair use' argument in AI training is getting messier by the day. 🤔
