Reddit's Revenue Surges with AI and Advertising Push
Reddit's second-quarter earnings report on Thursday underscores a significant ramp-up in the company's focus on artificial intelligence.
A major area of investment is expanding its advertising business, bolstered by its AI-driven marketing tools. The financial results confirm that advertising remains Reddit's primary revenue source, generating $465 million and accounting for 93% of total revenue.
Last month, Reddit introduced two new advertiser features: Reddit Insights, a tool that analyzes the platform's billions of posts and comments to identify trends and provide real-time campaign intelligence, and Conversation Summary Add-ons, enabling advertisers to embed authentic Reddit user discussions directly into their ads to showcase public sentiment.
The company also experienced growth in its "other revenue" category, which encompasses its data licensing business—specifically, its agreements with AI developers for data access. Reddit reported this category grew 24% year-over-year to $35 million, up from $28.1 million during the same period last year.
Reddit has already secured content licensing partnerships with leading AI companies like Google and OpenAI. While these deals are still in their early stages, the second-quarter results indicate a promising and stable long-term revenue stream.
Another notable AI feature is the Reddit Answers tool, launched in December. This conversational interface now attracts 6 million weekly users, a substantial increase from 1 million users in the prior quarter.
In a shareholder letter, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman stated the platform is focused on integrating the tool "more deeply into the core search experience" to establish "search as a central feature across Reddit."
