Pentagon Flags Anthropic as Supply Chain Risk, Stoking AI Sector Concerns
March 5, 2026 – The U.S. Department of Defense officially designated AI unicorn Anthropic and its products as a "supply chain risk." This unprecedented decision marks a full escalation in tensions between leading AI labs and government military requirements.
According to Bloomberg reports citing senior defense officials, the classification followed weeks of confrontation. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei explicitly refused to allow military use of its AI systems for mass surveillance of U.S. citizens or for fully autonomous weapons without human oversight. Meanwhile, the Pentagon maintained that private contractors should not restrict how the military employs cutting-edge technologies.

The designation has substantially impacted the industry landscape, as the "supply chain risk" label was previously reserved for foreign hostile entities. As a result, any organization working with the Pentagon must now certify that it has not used the Claude series models. Currently, U.S. military operations across the Middle East, including in Iran, rely heavily on the Claude model integrated into Palantir's Maven system for operational data management. The ban may force a reconfiguration of existing military intelligence infrastructure.
In contrast to Anthropic’s firm stance, OpenAI reached an agreement with the Department of Defense permitting military use of its systems for "all legitimate purposes." OpenAI President Greg Brockman recently donated $25 million to related political organizations. Amodei criticized the Defense Department’s move as "retaliatory," suggesting it was linked to his refusal to endorse specific political positions.
Hundreds of employees at OpenAI and Google have since launched protests, demanding the reversal of this designation. The incident underscores the difficult choices AI companies face between military ethics and commercial access. It also signals that governance of advanced AI is entering a new era of strict regulation driven by government mandates, presenting serious challenges to the autonomy of tech firms.
