Opera Launches Native AI Browser Agent

Opera has recently introduced a new AI agent named Browser Operator, designed to perform various tasks across different websites, enhancing user convenience and efficiency. In a demonstration video, Opera showcased the AI's capabilities by having it select a pair of socks from Walmart, purchase football match tickets directly from a club's website, and arrange a flight and hotel booking via Booking.com. The company plans to roll out this feature to users through its Feature Drop program in the near future.
While the exact scope of Browser Operator's abilities remains somewhat unclear, it's uncertain whether it can navigate individual websites or handle broader, more complex queries like finding the cheapest flight from London to New York for the next day by searching across multiple sites. It's noteworthy that Opera already offers AI features that allow users to ask questions about the webpage they are currently viewing.
Opera emphasizes transparency and control, allowing users to monitor Browser Operator's actions in real-time and intervene by taking control of the screen whenever necessary. The company also touts the AI's security, claiming it operates directly on the user's device, avoiding the vulnerabilities associated with cloud-based browsers or virtual machines.
The competition in this space is intense. OpenAI's AI agent, Operator, is accessible to ChatGPT Pro users and similarly utilizes a browser interface. The Browser Company, creators of the Arc Browser, has hinted at a forthcoming browser called Dia with agentic capabilities. Additionally, Perplexity is gearing up to launch its browser, Comet, further heating up the race in AI-assisted browsing technology.
