OpenAI Unveils Image Generator for All Users

OpenAI's latest image generator, powered by the GPT-4o model, is now accessible to everyone, according to CEO Sam Altman's post on X. Previously, this feature was exclusive to ChatGPT's paying subscribers.
Although it's not yet known how many images free users can create, Altman hinted last week that there might be a cap at three images per day.
Since its launch, OpenAI's image-generation tool has been a hit, with Altman joking that the demand was so intense it was causing their GPUs to "melt." The tool also stirred up some controversy when users started transforming photos into the distinctive style of Studio Ghibli, sparking debates about copyright and the data used to train the AI, especially due to the striking similarities in style.
There have also been instances of the tool being used to create fake documents, like restaurant receipts. An OpenAI spokesperson told TechCrunch that all images produced by ChatGPT come with metadata showing they were AI-generated, and the company "takes action" if these images breach their guidelines.
In other news, OpenAI announced on Monday that it secured $40 billion in funding, led by SoftBank, valuing the company at $300 billion. They also reported that ChatGPT now boasts 500 million weekly active users and 700 million monthly active users.

Super cool that OpenAI's image generator is now open to everyone! 🎉 I’m excited to mess around with it and see what wild creations I can come up with. Wonder how it stacks up against MidJourney? 🤔
