OpenAI Tells Court It Would Acquire Google's Chrome Browser

If Google is compelled to divest Chrome, OpenAI's head of product informed a judge today that the company would be interested in acquiring the browser, Reuters reports.
The potential spin-off of Chrome is a remedy proposed by the U.S. Department of Justice in U.S. v. Google. Judge Amit Mehta ruled last year that Google holds a monopoly in online search, and the remedies phase of the trial started this Monday. Google intends to appeal the decision.
Nick Turley, the OpenAI executive, also testified that OpenAI reached out to Google last year to explore a partnership that would integrate Google's search technology into ChatGPT. While ChatGPT currently utilizes Bing's search data, Turley indicated—without explicitly naming Microsoft—that OpenAI has encountered "significant quality issues" with a firm referred to as “Provider No. 1,” according to Bloomberg.

"We believe that collaborating with multiple partners, and especially Google’s API, would help us deliver a superior product to users," OpenAI stated in an email presented during the trial, as reported by Reuters. Google opted not to partner with OpenAI, and Turley confirmed that "we currently have no partnership with Google."
OpenAI has also been developing its own search index. While the initial goal was for ChatGPT to rely on it for 80% of searches by late 2025, Turley testified that the company now expects reaching that target will take several more years, according to Bloomberg.
