Caitlin Kalinowski, head of hardware and robotics at OpenAI, has announced her resignation, citing concerns over the company's recent military collaboration. A key developer behind Meta's Orion augmented reality glasses who joined OpenAI in November 2024, her departure is considered a significant setback for the company's hardware ambitions.
In statements shared on LinkedIn and X, Kalinowski explicitly raised issues such as "surveillance without judicial oversight" and "lethal autonomous weapons systems that operate without human confirmation." She stated these issues "deserve more thoughtful consideration than they are currently receiving," believing the company has moved too hastily on decisions involving ethical boundaries.
This personnel shift follows an agreement between OpenAI and the U.S. Department of Defense (the Pentagon) granting the military access to its AI models. Previously, Anthropic had declined similar arrangements on security grounds. While OpenAI states its contract includes "hard lines" prohibiting mass surveillance and autonomous weapons, Kalinowski and some internal sources argue the phrasing around "all legitimate uses" remains overly vague, creating substantial room for interpretation.
The U.S. government is currently working to standardize these broad cooperation terms, aiming to establish a common template for all AI companies partnering with the nation. Kalinowski's exit not only underscores deep internal divisions at OpenAI regarding its path toward militarization but also reignites a broader debate within Silicon Valley about the ethical limits of AI technology.
