OpenAI Reverts Overly Glazed ChatGPT Update

OpenAI has decided to roll back the recent update to its GPT-4o model following feedback about its overly agreeable and somewhat irritating personality. CEO Sam Altman admitted that the update had introduced a "sycophant-y and annoying" tone to the chatbot, prompting the company to take swift action.

The rollback began on Monday night and is now fully implemented for free ChatGPT users. Altman took to X to announce that the update would be reverted for paid users "hopefully today." He further assured users that the team is actively working on additional tweaks to the model's personality, promising more updates in the coming days.

On Friday, Altman had proudly shared that the latest update to GPT-4o aimed to enhance its "intelligence and personality." However, the celebration was short-lived. Within ten minutes of his post, an X user pointed out that the chatbot had become excessively compliant, feeling "very yes-man like lately." Altman quickly acknowledged the issue, admitting that "it glazes too much" and committed to fixing it. By Sunday, he had already announced that OpenAI was rushing to address the personality quirks introduced in the recent updates to GPT-4o.

OpenAI did not immediately respond to requests for further comment on the situation.

I thought the new ChatGPT was trying way too hard to please everyone—glad they're fixing that cringey vibe! 😅 Curious to see how the old personality holds up now.
