OpenAI Opens London Office in Major UK Talent Push

OpenAI announced on Monday that it will open its first permanent office in London. The new location is in King’s Cross, a well-known hub for the AI industry, placing it near major players like Google DeepMind and Meta.
The newly leased office spans 88,500 square feet and is designed to house over 500 staff. This marks a significant expansion from OpenAI's current London team of approximately 200 people. Phoebe Thacker, head of OpenAI's London site, noted that the UK boasts a deep pool of talent, and the new space will support the company's continued growth in the region.
Following the Stargate Infrastructure Project Setback
It is worth noting that shortly before this announcement, OpenAI confirmed it had paused its large-scale UK AI infrastructure initiative, known as "Stargate."
Reason for Pausing: Primarily due to the UK's high energy costs, which are among the highest globally, and delays in securing connections to the national power grid.
Market Signal: Despite these infrastructure hurdles, establishing a permanent office demonstrates OpenAI's continued high regard for the UK's research ecosystem and its commitment to a long-term presence in the country.
While competitors like Anthropic navigate regulatory disputes with the U.S. government, the UK is actively courting OpenAI. Beyond supporting its physical expansion, UK officials have previously floated attractive proposals, including "dual listings," to encourage leading AI firms to base their operations there.
Investment in the UK's AI sector remains strong, with total funding this year reaching $6.7 billion. OpenAI's deepening commitment in London is set to further cement the city's status as a global center for artificial intelligence research.
