OpenAI Appoints New Nonprofit Advisors to Oversee Governance

OpenAI has unveiled its inaugural advisory board for the nonprofit oversight committee, appointing four distinguished leaders: civil rights icon Dolores Huerta, educator Monica Lozano, public health expert Dr. Robert K. Ross, and technology advocate Jack Oliver. According to Tuesday's announcement, these advisors will play a pivotal role in shaping OpenAI's charitable initiatives and ensuring responsible development of AI technologies.

The newly appointed advisors bring decades of leadership across diverse sectors. Huerta revolutionized labor organizing alongside Cesar Chavez, while Lozano has shaped educational policy through her leadership at College Futures Foundation alongside her governance role at Apple. Ross brings transformative public health experience from The California Endowment, and Oliver contributes expertise spanning government, tech innovation, and corporate social responsibility.

This advisory appointment follows OpenAI's controversial restructuring earlier this year to establish a capped-profit subsidiary. The strategic shift drew criticism from former employees who joined Elon Musk's lawsuit alleging mission drift from OpenAI's original nonprofit commitment to benefit humanity. Seventeen nonprofit and philanthropic organizations subsequently petitioned California's Attorney General to investigate whether the restructuring complies with nonprofit regulations.

In response to mounting scrutiny, OpenAI maintains its nonprofit foundation remains intact and central to its operations. "Our nonprofit governance structure remains foundational," stated the announcement. "This advisory council will amplify our ability to support global problem-solving initiatives—from healthcare breakthroughs and educational access to scientific research and civic innovation."
