OpenAI Launches Robotics Push, Forms In-House Team for Embodied Intelligence

OpenAI, the artificial intelligence leader, has officially launched a Robotics division, marking a major expansion from pure software AI into embodied intelligence. The goal is to bridge the gap between digital models and the physical world using its powerful large language model foundations.
CEO Sam Altman has publicly called for applications from full-stack hardware, operations, systems, and machine learning engineers. He emphasized that AI should tangibly improve real-world human lives. To achieve this, the team has outlined a phased roadmap: near-term efforts will concentrate on robots that aid technical workers in infrastructure projects, while the long-term ambition is to deliver a versatile personal robot for every individual, capable of handling diverse tasks.
Aditya Ramesh, the inventor of the DALL-E series and lead of the Sora video generation model, spearheads the new division. For the past year, he has been directing a team on the "World Simulation Research Project," which has now rapidly transformed into the robotics department. His mission is to help AI comprehend the mechanics of the physical world and equip it with the ability to interact at an AGI level in dynamic real-world settings.
Interestingly, OpenAI had previously invested in multiple robotics startups but recently ended those partnerships. The fundamental disagreement was over technical strategy: some startups argued that general large models cannot be easily adapted to robot hardware, so they advocated for vertically integrated, end-to-end models. Faced with this bottleneck, OpenAI decided to build its own integrated hardware-software capabilities, which will also put it in direct competition with industry players like Tesla in the embodied intelligence space.
