OpenAI Chief Scientist Warns AI May Soon Enter Self-Improvement Phase, Hopes Industry Will Voluntarily Slow Down

Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI’s Chief Scientist, cautioned that artificial intelligence is advancing at an unprecedented speed, complicating human oversight and control. He urged AI developers to voluntarily decelerate progress to prioritize safety.
"Self-Improving Models Are Imminent"
In a recent article, Pachocki noted that AI systems have rapidly evolved to control computers, collaborate with humans and other AIs, and conduct independent research. He warned that these models will soon achieve "recursive self-improvement," enhancing themselves without human intervention.
"This demands extreme caution," Pachocki wrote. "I am concerned that no one is prepared for the fallout of unchecked, rapid machine intelligence growth."
Voluntary Pauses Should Precede Universal Safety Standards
Pachocki suggested that developers could either steer AI more rigorously toward human interests or "pause development when necessary." He expressed hope that voluntary slowdowns would become standard practice before universal safety benchmarks are established.
This view mirrors recent OpenAI disclosures: while the company uses AI agents to accelerate development, it admits that safety and alignment may not keep pace with model capabilities. More powerful systems are harder to monitor. Pachocki, who previously stated that no lab has yet achieved reliable AI alignment, called for governments to prioritize international coordination.
