NotebookLM Adds Web Source Discovery Feature

If you've ever used NotebookLM, you know the drill: you manually upload sources for your projects, whether it's for writing a paper, planning a trip, or transcribing interviews. But guess what? There's a cool new feature rolling out, and it's called Discover sources.
So, how does it work? Just hit the Discover button in NotebookLM, type in what you're curious about, and boom—NotebookLM scours the web and brings back a handpicked bunch of sources that are spot-on for your topic. With a single click, you can add these sources to your notebook. It's a super quick way to get a handle on a new subject or gather all the must-reads on something you're diving into.
Here's the lowdown on how it all goes down:
When you tell NotebookLM what you're into, it goes out and grabs hundreds of potential web sources in a flash. It then sifts through them, picking out the cream of the crop based on what you're looking for. You'll get up to 10 source suggestions, each with a little summary that explains why it's relevant to your topic.
With just one click, you can bring these sources into your notebook and start using them with other NotebookLM goodies like Briefing Docs, FAQs, and Audio Overviews. Plus, the sources stick around in your notebook, so you can read the full thing, ask questions through chat, and use NotebookLM's citation and note-taking tools.
And hey, if you're new to NotebookLM, there's a fun little extra: the "I'm Feeling Curious" button. It pulls up sources on a random topic, giving you a quick demo of how the source discovery works.
Here's how you can jump in:
- Head over to notebooklm.google.com.
- Open a notebook.
- In the Sources panel, tap the Discover button.
- Type in what you want to explore.
Discover sources is just the beginning of a bunch of new NotebookLM features powered by Gemini, designed to help you find and gather the right sources for your notebook. It's starting to roll out today for all NotebookLM users, and we figure it'll take about a week or so to get to everyone.
[ttpp]How it works
When you describe your topic, NotebookLM gathers hundreds of potential web sources in seconds. It analyzes them and picks the most relevant ones based on your defined topic. It presents up to 10 source recommendations, each with an annotated summary explaining its relevance to your topic.
With one click, you can import these sources and use them with other NotebookLM features, such as Briefing Docs, FAQs, and Audio Overviews. The sources will remain in your notebook, allowing you to also read the originals, ask questions via chat, and use NotebookLM's citation and note-taking features.
We've even included a fun additional feature for newcomers to NotebookLM: the “I'm Feeling Curious” button. It generates sources on a random topic, offering a quick way for you to see the product’s source discovery agent in action.
Here’s how you can use it:
- Go to notebooklm.google.com.
- Open up a notebook.
- In the Sources panel, tap the Discover button.
- Describe what you’re interested in.
Discover sources is the first of a series of NotebookLM features that uses the power of Gemini to find and collect relevant sources for your notebook. It will start rolling out today for all NotebookLM users, and we expect the rollout to take about a week or so.

Finally! No more hopping between browser tabs to gather research material 🙌 NotebookLM's new feature is exactly what I needed for my thesis writing marathon. Hope they add citation formatting next!
