On June 20, John Jumper, a Google vice president and head of AlphaFold, announced his resignation and confirmed plans to join rival Anthropic. Both organizations have verified the move, which marks another significant departure from Google’s core research team.
John Jumper spent nearly nine years at DeepMind, where he became a leading figure in scientific AI. Along with DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, he was awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for groundbreaking work in protein structure prediction. AlphaFold, one of DeepMind's most iconic achievements, has had a substantial impact on science and medicine. Hassabis thanked Jumper on social media, praising his contributions.
This move carries implications beyond scientific research. Industry sources note that Jumper was not only a scientific AI expert but also a key contributor to Google’s AI programming tools team.
