Musk Unveils Terafab Chip Factory to Power Tesla and SpaceX with In-House Compute
During an event in Austin, Texas, Elon Musk unveiled a detailed plan for deep collaboration between SpaceX and Tesla in semiconductor manufacturing. Bloomberg reports that Musk intends to build a dedicated chip fabrication center named "Terafab" near Tesla's Austin headquarters and its "superfactory." The goal is to address the fundamental mismatch between current semiconductor production capacity and the surging demand from AI and robotics by vertically integrating the supply chain.

At the event, Musk openly stated that the pace of semiconductor manufacturers has become a bottleneck for his technological progress, remarking, "Either build Terafab or face a chip shortage," making vertical integration an unavoidable step. According to the technical vision disclosed, Terafab aims to produce ultra-high-performance chips that can support 100 to 200 gigawatts of computing power on Earth and 1 terawatt in space each year. This ambitious target not only covers the on-device computing needs for Tesla's Full Self-Driving and Optimus robots but also hints at SpaceX's strategic planning for interstellar communication and deep-space computing.
While the plan showcases Musk's ambition for cross-industry integration, it does not include a specific construction timeline.
