Mistral AI, a leading French artificial intelligence firm, announced on May 19 the acquisition of Emmi AI, a Vienna-based startup specializing in physical AI. This strategic move is designed to enhance Mistral AI’s customized service offerings for European industrial clients. While the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, Emmi AI recently made headlines by securing Austria’s largest funding round in history in 2025, raising €15 million.
Emmi AI specializes in developing AI models capable of simulating complex physical phenomena, including airflow, heat transfer, and material stress. These technologies hold significant value for heavy industry and high-precision manufacturing. Mistral AI currently develops tailored AI systems for major industrial players such as ASML, Stellantis, and Veolia, supporting critical operations like production defect detection and precise robotic arm control. Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral AI, noted that this acquisition will substantially strengthen the company’s market position in the aerospace, automotive, and semiconductor sectors.
From an industry perspective, traditional large language models are increasingly expanding into “physical AI,” focusing on understanding and simulating the physical world. By integrating Emmi AI’s core physical simulation technology, Mistral AI is transitioning from pure digital text intelligence to industrial physical intelligence. This move deepens AI’s penetration into Europe’s high-end manufacturing supply chain, establishing a new benchmark for the comprehensive application of large models in heavy industry.
