Mistral AI Acquires Koyeb to Advance Cloud Computing Strategy

Mistral AI, the French AI firm last valued at $13.8 billion, has completed its inaugural acquisition. The company, a notable rival to OpenAI, has finalized a deal to acquire Koyeb. Based in Paris, Koyeb is a startup specializing in simplifying large-scale AI application deployment and managing the underlying infrastructure.
While Mistral has built its reputation primarily on developing large language models (LLMs), this acquisition underscores its strategic move to become a comprehensive, full-stack AI provider. This follows the company's June 2025 launch of Mistral Compute, its AI cloud infrastructure service, which it now aims to accelerate with Koyeb's technology and team.
Founded in 2020 by three former employees of the French cloud provider Scaleway, Koyeb's mission was to enable developers to process data without the complexities of server management—a serverless approach. This model became increasingly relevant as AI workloads grew more intensive, leading Koyeb to recently launch "Sandboxes," which offer isolated environments for deploying AI agents.
Prior to the acquisition, Koyeb's platform was already used to deploy models from Mistral and other providers. In a recent blog post, Koyeb confirmed its platform will remain operational. However, its team and technology will now also be integrated to help Mistral deploy models directly on client-owned hardware (on-premises), optimize GPU utilization, and scale AI inference—the process of running a trained model to generate outputs—according to a Mistral press release.
As part of the agreement, Koyeb's 13 employees, including its three co-founders Yann Léger, Edouard Bonlieu, and Bastien Chatelard (pictured in 2020), will join Mistral's engineering division. They will report to Mistral's CTO and co-founder, Timothée Lacroix. Under his oversight, Koyeb's platform is expected to evolve into a "core component" of Mistral Compute in the coming months.
"Koyeb's product and expertise will accelerate our development on the Compute front and contribute to building a true AI cloud," Lacroix stated. Mistral has been aggressively expanding its cloud capabilities. Just days ago, the company announced a $1.4 billion investment in Swedish data centers, capitalizing on rising demand for alternatives to U.S.-based infrastructure.
Koyeb had raised a total of $8.6 million in funding. This included a $1.6 million pre-seed round in 2020 and a $7 million seed round in 2023 led by Paris-based venture capital firm Serena. Floriane de Maupeou, a principal at Serena, praised the acquisition, telling TechCrunch that this partnership will be instrumental "in building the foundations of sovereign AI infrastructure in Europe."

Mistral has not disclosed the financial details of the transaction, and it is unclear if further acquisitions are planned. However, speaking at the Techarena conference in Stockholm last week, CEO Arthur Mensch highlighted that Mistral is actively hiring for infrastructure and other roles.
