Microsoft Upgrades Copilot Notebooks With Task Delegation, Office Editing, and Interactive Reports
Microsoft is rolling out key updates to Copilot Notebooks, including task delegation, in-place Office document editing, and interactive reports. This shift transforms the tool from a simple AI organizer into a comprehensive smart workspace for executing tasks. As per Microsoft’s October 2026 update, these features are being gradually released via the Frontier Preview Program.
Copilot Notebooks already integrate documents, emails, and meeting notes to answer queries, generate study guides, and create audio summaries. With this update, users can delegate tasks to Copilot and schedule recurring automations, such as daily briefings or weekly status reports. For instance, project managers can automatically generate progress reports using project files and meeting records, significantly reducing manual effort.

Regarding document processing, users can now open and edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files directly within notebooks, eliminating the need to switch to separate Office applications. The new interactive report feature includes visual charts and filters, enabling users to explore and analyze underlying data more effectively.
Microsoft has also broadened the sources for audio summaries to include Teams conversations and Outlook emails. New "Comment" and "Debate" modes allow users to view notebook content from multiple perspectives. Additionally, Copilot can suggest relevant documents and presentations based on existing materials, with users able to choose between models from OpenAI and Anthropic.
While Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) focuses primarily on information retrieval and knowledge comprehension, Microsoft is expanding Copilot Notebooks to include content editing, periodic task automation, and interactive data analysis. This strategy further strengthens its integration with the Microsoft 365 office ecosystem.
