Microsoft announced significant layoffs on Tuesday, affecting over 6,000 employees—approximately three percent of its global workforce. These mark the most extensive job cuts at the company since it eliminated 10,000 positions in 2023, with impacts spanning multiple Microsoft business units.
"We are making ongoing organizational adjustments to ensure the company remains competitive and responsive in a rapidly evolving market," Microsoft spokesperson Pete Wootton stated in an official communication with The Verge.
Reports indicate the layoffs will affect employees at all levels, including staff at Microsoft-owned LinkedIn and several international offices. These workforce reductions follow recent comments from Microsoft CFO Amy Hood, who emphasized streamlining management structures. "We are committed to developing high-performance teams and enhancing operational agility by reducing hierarchical layers and managerial roles," Hood noted on April 30th. Earlier this year, Microsoft also initiated performance-based dismissals, resulting in hundreds of additional job losses.
The recent cuts follow Microsoft's earlier workforce adjustments, including the layoff of 1,900 Activision Blizzard and Xbox staff over a year ago. In May 2024, the company shuttered several game development studios, including Tango Gameworks, creator of Hi-Fi Rush, and Arkane Austin, developer of Redfall. Tango Gameworks subsequently resumed operations through a partnership with Krafton.
In September, Microsoft eliminated an additional 650 Xbox positions as part of restructuring efforts following its acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The company also reduced its HoloLens and Azure cloud teams by approximately 1,000 employees in June.
