Microsoft hides AI uninstall option in Win11, freeing over 2.5GB of disk space with one click
Microsoft quietly added an uninstall option for AI models in the latest Windows 11 Insider Preview build 26300.8553, a feature not listed in the official update log. This new option appears on the Settings page, letting users easily remove related AI components.
This uninstall option is welcome news for users with limited disk space. Screenshots reveal that the built-in Phi Silica model alone occupies over 2.59 GB, and the newly added button makes it simple to remove.
Keep Edge AI Features on Demand
Starting with version 24H2, Windows 11 categorizes hardware into Copilot+ PCs (AI PCs). These devices come with multiple AI models to enable edge AI capabilities, which has substantially raised the minimum memory and storage requirements. Among these models, Phi Silica is a small language model from Microsoft that runs on the device's NPU, handling tasks like text summarization and rewriting.
Beyond text models, these PCs also include AI components for image processing, which analyze prompts and perform intelligent background reconstruction and object removal. With the new uninstall option, users can remove unneeded AI models from the system based on their needs, achieving a personalized system experience.

As edge AI models become more common, the significant storage space they consume on local drives has drawn widespread attention. For instance, Google Chrome was recently criticized for silently downloading around 4GB of edge AI models locally, leading some users to tweak the registry to block automatic downloads.
By adding native AI uninstall options to Windows 11, Microsoft not only gives users more control over their system but also offers a flexible way to balance system intelligence with hardware resource usage.
