Earlier in June, Microsoft's Family Safety feature—commonly employed by parents and schools as a suite of parental controls and web filters—began unexpectedly preventing Google’s Chrome browser from launching on Windows. Initial accounts emerged on June 3rd, with some Chrome users reporting that the browser repeatedly closed or wouldn't open at all.
Microsoft inadvertently introduced a bug into its Family Safety system that targets Chrome specifically and blocks it from operating correctly on Windows. “Our team has looked into these reports and identified the source of the behavior,” explains Chrome support manager Ellen T. “When Microsoft Family Safety is active, Chrome won’t run for some users.”
Alternative browsers such as Firefox and Opera appear to be unaffected. Some users discovered that renaming the Chrome executable file to Chrome1.exe bypasses the problem. Schools or families who have enabled Family Safety as part of a Microsoft 365 plan can also deactivate the “filter inappropriate websites” setting within Family Safety to restore Chrome functionality—though this allows children to visit any site without restriction.
It remains uncertain when Microsoft will resolve the issue, which has persisted for over two weeks. We contacted Microsoft earlier this week for comment, but the company has not yet responded at the time of publishing.
“We haven’t received any update from Microsoft about an incoming fix,” noted a Chromium engineer in a bug tracking thread on June 10th. “They've shared instructions with users who report the issue on how to restore Chrome, but that approach is unlikely to help many people.”
Microsoft has a history of implementing unusual tactics in Windows to discourage Chrome usage. Although the Family Safety problem appears to be an unintentional bug, the company has previously used alerts, fabricated AI responses, intrusive pop-ups resembling malware, and even a poll embedded on Google’s Chrome download page to encourage switching to Microsoft Edge. Earlier this year, Microsoft also manipulated Bing results to mimic Google’s search interface.
