Microsoft Bars Staff From Top AI Model to Stop Data Leaks

Amid growing concerns over data privacy and information security, Microsoft has introduced internal usage restrictions. According to tech media reports, the company has prohibited employees from accessing Claude 5, the latest flagship large language model from AI startup Anthropic. The primary driver behind this ban is the model’s updated data retention policy.
Data Retention Policy Raises Red Flags
While Microsoft made the model available to external paying customers shortly after its launch, it has been removed from the roster of approved internal tools for staff. Other models within the Claude family, which strictly follow a “zero data retention” policy, remain accessible for internal use. Microsoft’s legal team is currently conducting a thorough review of this controversial policy, and the model cannot receive internal approval until that assessment is complete.
Security Measures Spark Debate
The data retention policy at the center of the controversy was introduced by Anthropic to support its new security classification framework. Given Claude 5’s advanced capabilities in sensitive areas such as cybersecurity, the company implemented protective measures that result in user queries and outputs being retained for 30 days, with potentially problematic data stored for up to two years. This provision, which poses a potential risk to corporate core assets, ultimately triggered Microsoft’s compliance concerns.
