Meta Memo: Deep Restructuring Affects 20% of Workforce, 7,000 Move to AI Frontline
Meta internally informed employees on May 18 via a memo that it will carry out major layoffs and a restructuring plan this week, highlighting the company's accelerating shift toward an AI-focused strategy.
According to the memo, Meta will officially lay off 10% of its global workforce on May 20, with expectations of even larger cuts later this year. Beyond direct layoffs, Meta will also flatten its management structure by significantly reducing managerial roles. Janelle Gale, Meta's Chief Human Resources Officer, noted that many departments have adopted "AI-native design principles" in designing the new structure. Moving forward, the company will operate through more streamlined, autonomous small teams to achieve faster response times.

As part of this AI-driven restructuring, Meta also plans to reassign up to 7,000 employees to new projects tied to AI workflows, with some transfers already underway. Combined with layoffs and job transfers, this round of restructuring will directly affect about 20% of Meta's workforce, while the company has also closed another 6,000 open positions.
Amid the global tech giants' race toward general artificial intelligence (AGI), Meta's aggressive restructuring underscores how Silicon Valley companies are accelerating the transition from the "mobile internet era" to the "AI era," redefining productivity paradigms. Its moves to reshape organizational boundaries based on AI-native principles could trigger a new wave of industry imitation, particularly around micro-efficient teams and AI workflow reorganization.
