Meta Rolls Out Standalone AI App in Challenge to ChatGPT
Following the integration of Meta AI into WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, Meta is now introducing a dedicated, standalone AI application. Launched during Tuesday's Meta LlamaCon event, this app provides direct access to Meta AI, functioning similarly to the ChatGPT app and other AI assistant platforms.
To attract a wider user base, Meta is capitalizing on its unique advantage over competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic: its deep understanding of user identities, interests, and social circles, derived from years of personal data shared on Facebook and Instagram.
Meta's new AI application distinguishes itself from other assistants by drawing upon information users have voluntarily shared across Meta's platforms, such as their profiles and content interactions, the company explained. Initially, these customized responses will be accessible to users in the US and Canada.
Users can also provide Meta AI with additional personal details to be remembered for future conversations. For instance, informing the AI about a lactose intolerance ensures it will consider this before suggesting activities like a wine and cheese tasting during vacation planning.
As with any AI service, users should remain mindful of how Meta may utilize the data shared with its chatbots. The company's extensive user data fuels its targeted advertising operations, which constitute the majority of its revenue.

A sample scenario shows a user asking the AI to describe them using three emojis and then posting the result. Interaction data will only appear in this feed if the user explicitly chooses to share it.
This feed has the potential to popularize certain generative AI trends, much like recent viral filters that transformed user photos into Barbie dolls or Studio Ghibli characters. However, it's worth questioning whether every app truly needs a social feed — we haven't forgotten about you, Venmo.
