Lin Junyang, QWEN core leader, says departure due to need for break after years in large models
On March 4, another significant personnel shift occurred in the large model space. Lin Jinyang (Justin Lin), the core leader behind Alibaba's Qwen large model, officially announced his resignation on social media.
This morning, Lin Jinyang posted a short but emotionally charged message on social media: "Me stepping down. Bye my beloved Qwen." (I'm stepping down. Goodbye, my beloved Qwen.) The news quickly sparked heated discussions in the tech community.
As a key figure in the Tongyi Qwen team, Lin Jinyang played a crucial role in developing Alibaba's large models. His reluctance when leaving also reflects his deep attachment to the Qwen brand and the team.
As public reaction grew, Lin Jinyang responded again via his WeChat Moments this afternoon. He stated that he is currently unable to respond to all the greetings and inquiries from the outside:
"Sorry, everyone, I won't be replying to messages or calls today. I really need some rest."
At the same time, he took the opportunity to encourage his former team members: "Qwen brothers, continue working as planned, everything will be fine." This statement aimed to stabilize team morale, suggesting that the subsequent development of the Qwen large model would not be significantly affected by his personal departure.
Currently, Alibaba has not officially announced a successor or details regarding Lin Jinyang's resignation. As for external speculation about whether he will start an "AI startup" or join a competitor, Lin Jinyang has not yet given a clear response.
