Leaked Reports: OpenAI Deeply Involved in Hardware, Developing AI Phone Without Apps

Reports indicate that OpenAI is preparing to drop a "depth charge" in the hardware arena. According to the latest insights from industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the AI powerhouse is in close collaboration with MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Luxshare Precision to co-develop a disruptive smartphone project.
This initiative not only assembles top-tier supply chain resources but also signals OpenAI's deep engagement with the core architecture. The phone's chipset is being co-designed by OpenAI, MediaTek, and Qualcomm, with Luxshare Precision serving a dual role as both a co-design and manufacturing partner. This "powerful alliance" suggests OpenAI's ambition to redefine mobile interaction from the hardware level up.
The key differentiator from conventional smartphones is its core innovation: the "AI Agent." Moving away from the current model reliant on hundreds or thousands of standalone apps, OpenAI envisions a device built around an AI agent, effectively replacing the traditional app ecosystem. By continuously learning a user's context, the AI agent will directly assist in completing tasks. Technically, the device is expected to leverage a hybrid approach, combining smaller on-device models with powerful cloud-based large models to allocate computing resources based on task complexity.
While the hardware roadmap is taking shape, a commercial launch is still some way off. The phone's final specifications and supplier list are anticipated to be locked in by late 2026 or early 2027. If development proceeds as planned, mass production could commence as early as 2028.
