Google Expands NotebookLM Access to Younger Students Amid Rising AI Education Competition

Google’s AI-powered note-taking tool is now accessible to younger users, previously restricted to those 18 and older. The company announced that NotebookLM is available for Google Workspace for Education users of all ages and consumers aged 13 and above.
Lifting age restrictions aims to empower younger students with an advanced AI research tool to enhance their understanding of academic content. Students can now utilize features like transforming notes into podcast-style Audio Overviews, creating visual summaries with interactive Mind Maps, and more. NotebookLM also introduced Video Overviews, enabling users to convert notes, PDFs, and images into dynamic presentations.
This move comes as concerns grow over AI use in education, particularly around data privacy and potential misuse. Google emphasizes that NotebookLM applies stricter content controls for users under 18 to ensure appropriate responses, with user chats and uploads neither reviewed by humans nor used for AI training.
The broader access to NotebookLM for younger users coincides with OpenAI’s launch of a study mode for ChatGPT, signaling intensifying competition in the AI education market.
