Google Discover Introduces AI-Powered News Summaries

Google is now introducing AI-generated summaries directly in Discover, the personalized news feed within the Google Search app. TechCrunch notes that select US users on iOS and Android are seeing Discover cards with these summaries replacing traditional headlines and publisher logos—similar to how AI Overviews appear atop search results. This approach further blurs news sources as publishers see a continued decline in search traffic.
In Discover, the AI summaries show stacked icons in the top-left corner to indicate the number of sources used. Tapping these icons opens a "More" panel listing the full set of referenced articles. Users first see a brief three-line preview and can expand the summary by selecting "See more." A clear notice appears below the text explaining the summaries are AI-generated and may contain inaccuracies.
The feature seems to have been in development for some time. Bug hunter AndellDam observed tests of AI Overview-style summaries on Google Discover as early as June. A Google spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch this is an official US rollout on iOS and Android, not a test. Google stated that the feature will focus on trending topics in lifestyle, sports, and entertainment, aiming to help users decide which pages to visit.
This is the latest in a series of Google AI experiments that reduce user reliance on external links, following AI Overviews, Audio Overviews, and AI Mode tests in Search. Publishers are increasingly concerned as AI extracts key details from articles, causing a steep drop in website traffic and referrals—eroding the incentive for users to visit original sources. This trend, commonly called Google Zero, has already contributed to the closure of sites like AnandTech, Giant Freakin Robot, Laptop Mag, and Buzzfeed News, shrinking the content pool available for Google's AI to learn from.

So Google is replacing human-written summaries with AI in Discover? I bet the bots will accidentally make some articles sound way more exciting than they actually are. 😂 Hope they don't mess up breaking news.
