Google's Data Commons Now Supports More UN Agencies

A year back, we kicked off a cool project with Google's Data Commons and the UN's Statistics Division from the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA). Our aim? To stitch together the scattered data from across the UN and make it way easier for everyone to use. Before this, the data was all over the place, which made life tough for policymakers, NGOs, and regular folks trying to make smart choices. To tackle this, Google's Data Commons team teamed up with the UN, thanks to some funding from Google.org, to create the UN Data Commons for the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). Think of it as a one-stop shop that uses tech and AI smarts to help push forward the SDGs. It's all about getting different agencies to share data and make decisions based on solid info. This year's UNGA theme is all about "Accelerating Solutions and Creating a Resilient Digital Future," and the UN is taking that seriously by spreading the Data Commons into more agencies. Our latest teamwork with the United Nations International Computing Centre (UNICC) is set to take what we started with UN DESA and expand it to other big names like the World Health Organization, the International Labour Organization, and UNICEF. This move totally backs up the UN Secretary-General's plan to use data to solve big problems in areas like climate, health, and farming. Stefan Schweinfest, the head of the UN Statistics Division, puts it this way: "The UN Data Commons for the SDGs isn't just about giving out info; it's about making that info accessible to everyone." With its interactive AI tools, easy access, and clear visuals, the platform helps users dive into data, spot trends, and make better calls for a brighter future. It shows just how powerful open data can be in driving change and moving us closer to those Sustainable Development Goals. With only six years left to hit the UN's big 2030 goal, the latest SDG report shows we've still got a long way to go. Over 80% of the goals are lagging behind. We've made some strides, sure, but we need to step it up to tackle big issues like poverty, hunger, clean energy, and gender equity. By expanding the UN Data Commons into more agencies, we're hoping to break down data barriers and pave the way to 2030.
