Google Discontinues Android Instant Apps Due to Low Adoption

Google Discontinues Android Instant Apps Feature
Google has officially announced it will phase out Android's Instant Apps functionality by year's end, citing insufficient user engagement with the feature. Initially launched in 2017, Instant Apps enabled developers to create lightweight app versions that launched immediately from web links - eliminating traditional installation requirements for trial experiences.
The Rise and Fall of Instant Apps
The innovative feature originally promised to revolutionize mobile app discovery by letting potential users sample applications directly from links, with particular benefits for gaming demos and product previews. Users enjoyed frictionless access to app experiences, while developers gained new opportunities to showcase their products.
Android Authority broke the story after developer Leon Omelan discovered an official deprecation notice within Android Studio's development environment. The warning clearly states:
"Instant Apps support will be removed by Google Play in December 2025. Publishing and all Google Play Instant APIs will no longer function. Development tools will be eliminated in the upcoming Android Studio Otter update."
Official Confirmation from Google
Google spokesperson Nia Carter verified the decision to The Verge, stating the company is prioritizing more effective app discovery methods:
"Adoption metrics for Instant Apps remained below expectations, and developers have shifted toward alternative discovery solutions like AI-powered app highlights and instant installations. This strategic realignment allows us to focus resources on more impactful initiatives while driving users toward complete app downloads for better engagement."

Interesting move by Google, but honestly I never even used Instant Apps once. Always felt like a solution looking for a problem when regular app installs are fine. Wonder if this signals a bigger shift away from 'lite' experiences in favor of Progressive Web Apps? 🤔
