Google Launches Live Translate on iOS with Gemini, Ditching Robotic Voices for 70+ Languages

Google has officially launched its iconic "Live Translate" feature from Google Translate on iOS, removing the previous ecosystem restriction that limited it to Pixel Buds and other Google hardware. This update allows users worldwide to use any wired or wireless headphones with a microphone to experience low-latency, immersive voice translation directly within the Google Translate app on both iOS and Android, making this advanced feature far more accessible.
Technically, this feature is powered by the underlying Gemini AI model, representing a major leap from word-for-word translation to true semantic understanding. Leveraging the context-awareness of large language models, Live Translate now accurately interprets slang, idioms, and complex phrasing, delivering results with a more natural, human-like tone. This solves the common issue of robotic output in traditional translation tools. Support has expanded to over 70 languages, including Arabic, Japanese, Spanish, and Punjabi, and the service is now available in 12 countries, up from just 3 initially.
This cross-platform release signals a strategic shift for Google Translate from being hardware-dependent to being driven by pure AI capability. By making its powerful algorithms more widely available, Google aims to strengthen its ecosystem in the multimodal interaction space. As the Gemini model continues to evolve, real-time translation is transforming from a simple tool into seamless interactive infrastructure, offering deeper technical support for global travel and cross-cultural collaboration.
