Google Gemma4 Triples Speed, Marking True Arrival of Offline Large Models

Just weeks after making a major splash in the open-source model field, Google has once again significantly upgraded its strongest open-source model, Gemma4. On May 5th local time, Google officially launched a Multi-Token Prediction (MTP) draft generator for the Gemma4 series. This technological breakthrough uses a speculative decoding architecture to increase the model's reasoning speed by up to three times without sacrificing output quality or logical capabilities.
As one of the most widely followed open-source models worldwide, Gemma4 has already garnered over 60 million downloads since its release. The primary aim of this update is to tackle the persistent reasoning bottleneck in large language models and further optimize computational efficiency.
Technical Breakdown: Achieving "Foresight" in Reasoning Acceleration
Traditional language model reasoning is often constrained by memory bandwidth. In simple terms, when the processor generates text, moving hundreds of billions of parameters from memory to the computing unit consumes significant time. This data transfer speed is much slower than the processing speed, leaving hardware resources idle most of the time and causing noticeable response delays.
To address this pain point, Google introduced speculative decoding. Its principle can be understood as a "master-slave" configuration: the system pairs heavy target models, such as Gemma 4 31B, with lightweight MTP drafters. The drafter uses idle computing resources to predict multiple upcoming tokens in advance, while the more powerful main model performs parallel verification. When predictions match, the model can confirm the entire sequence in a single computation, significantly reducing the time needed to generate text.
Test Results: Apple Silicon and Consumer Graphics Cards See Major Gains
According to official test data, the acceleration effect is especially noticeable on local devices. In Apple Silicon environments, with batch sizes between 4 and 8, the local inference speed of the Gemma 4 26B model increased by approximately 2.2 times.
This means developers can now run complex offline programming assistants or intelligent agent workflows more smoothly on personal computers and standard consumer graphics cards. Moreover, the improved inference efficiency has also significantly reduced power consumption on edge devices, paving the way for broader mobile AI adoption.
The Boundaries of AI Applications Continue to Expand
This technical update primarily targets scenarios with stringent low-latency requirements, such as real-time chatbots, automated programming tools, and various autonomous agents. With the MTP drafter, Google has shown that even in resource-constrained hardware environments, developers can deploy state-of-the-art language models without compromising on response speed or computational accuracy.
As the cost and barriers to inference continue to fall, the evolution of Gemma4 and its supporting technologies is driving AI from the cloud toward a wider array of personal computing devices.
