Google Chrome Frees 4GB on C Drive by Allowing Full Disabling and Deletion of Local AI Large Model
In an era where "no software is without AI" has become a common notion, major applications have been embedding AI components into their clients relentlessly. However, forcing these features on users often leads to frustration. Recently, Google Chrome—the world's top browser by market share—finally yielded to long-standing public pressure. In the latest Chrome 149 release, Google officially added a toggle to disable on-device AI, offering an official solution to the much-criticized problem of the local large model being forced to reside on the system.
Earlier, to deeply integrate the Gemini AI feature into the browser, Google introduced a silent operation across several versions of Chrome : the system automatically downloaded a local AI large model called OptGuideOnDeviceModel in the background. This model file, a hefty 4GB, offered little practical value for most ordinary users and unnecessarily consumed valuable C drive space.
What made this even more problematic was its stubborn behavior. In previous versions, even if users deleted the 4GB model using third-party cleaning tools or manually navigated to the directory, the system would silently re-download the file whenever the Chrome browser was restarted. Since Google never provided a native option to disable this feature, this one-sided design sparked long-term backlash from both developers and regular users.
With the release of Chrome 149 , Google finally filled this long-overlooked control gap. Now, users who find this feature unnecessary can simply type "chrome://settings/system" into the browser's address bar to access the newly added option to disable on-device AI.
Once users disable this feature, Chrome will automatically clean up and completely delete the 4GB OptGuideOnDeviceModel model in the background, without requiring users to manually search through complex hidden system folders. This change is especially useful for Chinese users, where due to factors like network conditions, this local AI feature has rarely worked properly in daily use. Disabling it and reclaiming 4GB of clean hard drive space is clearly a more practical choice.
