Goldman Sachs Partner Warns AI Outsourcing May Stifle Wall Street's Future Critical Thinking

Chris Chapman, executive partner at Goldman Sachs and leader of the firm’s flagship AI initiative "Market," cautions that the swift integration of artificial intelligence on Wall Street may erode the critical thinking skills of future financial professionals. Speaking on the "Exchanges" podcast, he highlighted that relying on AI models for reasoning could cause "cognitive atrophy," hindering the ability to approach problems from first principles.
The "Devilish Trade" and the Erosion of Mentorship
Chapman compares this trend to the decline of navigation and memory skills due to technological reliance, noting that as algorithms handle complex analysis, bankers risk losing their core analytical capabilities. While AI’s deep integration into Wall Street trading and banking may drive short-term profits, it threatens long-term expertise. Essentially, if AI replaces the hands-on training junior bankers rely on to learn decision-making, firms may sacrifice their mentorship culture and reduce hiring for entry-level roles.
