Gmail Rolls Out Automatic AI-Powered Email Summaries

Gemini-Powered Email Summaries Coming to Workspace Users
Google Workspace subscribers will notice Gemini's enhanced role in managing their inboxes as Gmail begins automatically generating summaries for complex email threads. These AI-created digests now appear directly above message contents without requiring user initiation.
While Google first introduced AI-generated email summaries last year, the feature previously required manual activation. The upgraded implementation employs AI to intelligently determine when summaries would benefit users, particularly for "longer email threads or messages with several replies." Notably, these summaries dynamically update as new responses arrive.
Currently rolling out exclusively for English-language mobile users over a two-week period, Google remains silent about desktop expansion timelines or potential availability for free-tier Gmail accounts.
The classic summary request option remains available when automatic generation doesn't occur. Users preferring traditional inbox views can disable all AI features by switching off "Smart features" in Gmail's settings menu.
