As AI continues to transform the search and content creation landscape, Getty Images , the world's leading visual content platform, has announced a major partnership with OpenAI. This integration brings Getty Images' extensive library of licensed images into ChatGPT, enriching user search and discovery with more visually compelling content.
A leader in commercial photography and visual content, Getty Images has already ventured into AI. It previously partnered with NVIDIA to launch the "Generative AI by Getty Images" tool. What sets this tool apart is that all training images are sourced from Getty's licensed library, and it offers full legal protection for generated works, tackling the copyright ambiguities often associated with AI content.
This "model + content licensing" strategy has become central to OpenAI's approach. As early as July 2023, OpenAI renewed a six-year agreement with Shutterstock , a well-known image platform, legally incorporating image, video, and music assets to supply high-quality training data for its AI models. This reflects OpenAI's ongoing efforts to build a rigorous copyright ecosystem.
Beyond visuals, OpenAI's content strategy also extends to text. In April 2024, the company formed a deep collaboration with the UK's Financial Times , leveraging its extensive database to train large models while also providing ChatGPT users with more authoritative news summaries and relevant links.
With the Getty Images partnership confirmed, OpenAI further strengthens its position in multimodal search and information interaction. For users, this means that future ChatGPT searches will deliver not only precise text answers but also high-quality, legally licensed visual images, making AI-assisted decision-making and content retrieval increasingly nuanced and refined.
