Gemini Enhances Google Workspace for Education

At Google for Education, we're excited about the potential of AI to revolutionize the way students, educators, and education communities learn and teach. We believe that AI can save time, spark creativity, and boost confidence in the learning process.

Today, we're thrilled to announce the launch of Gemini for Google Workspace for education users aged 18 and above, featuring two new paid add-ons that introduce a fresh approach to working, teaching, and learning with generative AI. We're also enhancing our flagship Gemini conversational experience to support confident learning. And soon, we'll roll out additional data protection for Gemini users 18 and older who are logged into their Workspace for Education school accounts, at no extra cost.

Bringing Gemini for Google Workspace to more education institutions

Gemini for Google Workspace opens up our most advanced generative AI models across your favorite apps, including Docs, Gmail, Slides, and more. Starting May 23rd, educational institutions can enhance their existing Workspace for Education edition for users 18 and older by purchasing one of our new add-ons:

  • Gemini Education is a cost-effective option designed to help institutions dip their toes into generative AI within Workspace, with a monthly usage limit. Admins can monitor usage trends through the Admin console.
  • Gemini Education Premium builds on Gemini Education by adding advanced features like AI-powered note-taking and summaries in Meet, along with AI-enhanced data loss prevention and more on the horizon. This add-on offers unrestricted access to generative AI tools in Workspace.

Early testing has shown that educators appreciate having Gemini seamlessly integrated into their everyday Workspace tools. Here are a few ways they've been using it:

  • Transforming a blank page into a lesson plan template, grant proposal, or job description in Docs
  • Summarizing long email threads with key points and action items in Gmail
  • Crafting an agenda for an upcoming professional development session in Sheets
  • Enhancing presentations or illustrating topics in class by generating original images in Slides

We're also experimenting with Gemini in Classroom, introducing new lesson planning features powered by LearnLM, our new family of models fine-tuned for education, based on Gemini and rooted in educational research.

Gemini for Google Workspace also lets you chat with Gemini safely and securely at gemini.google.com, complete with enterprise-grade data protection and access to our most capable generative AI models. Whether you're researching IT security best practices or planning an alumni outreach, Gemini can accelerate time-consuming tasks. It acts as a collaborative thought partner, helping you generate fresh ideas and tailor learning experiences to your students' interests, such as adjusting content levels or creating personalized class exercises and assignments.

The Gemini Education add-ons are flexible with no minimum purchase requirement, allowing institutions to buy as few or as many licenses as needed alongside any existing Workspace for Education edition. Check out our available pricing and discounts for more information.

Learn with confidence using new Gemini features

Given how popular Gemini has become for learning, we're excited to introduce OpenStax and Data Commons extensions, along with guided practice quizzes, to help you learn more confidently and from trusted sources. Here's a glimpse of what's coming soon:

  • Ask something like “@OpenStax how does the Moon's distance and orbital path influence the type of solar eclipse we see?” to get accurate, trustworthy responses sourced from Rice University’s OpenStax educational resources, complete with citations and links to peer-reviewed textbook content.
  • Get insights into complex topics like climate change, jobs, economics, and health by typing "@Data Commons" and asking questions like “show me a breakdown of business types in Florida" for authoritative data visualizations.
  • Test your knowledge with guided practice quizzes that guide you through questions and offer conversational feedback on your answers. For instance, ask Gemini “quiz me on the periodic table of elements.”

[ttpp]Providing additional data protection in Gemini when using your school account, free of charge[yyxx]

Coming soon, educators and students aged 18 and older will benefit from enhanced data protection when accessing Gemini at gemini.google.com using their school accounts, at no cost. With this added protection, your data will remain private, not used to train AI models, nor shared with others. This experience will utilize our 1.0 Pro model and be available in over 40 languages. Currently, Gemini is not accessible to users under 18 when using their Workspace for Education account.

While AI can't replace the unique expertise, knowledge, or creativity of educators, it certainly can enhance and enrich the teaching and learning experience. As we navigate the exciting world of generative AI, it's important to remember that it's still in its early stages. Always verify facts presented to you, and if in doubt, use Gemini's double-check feature, which leverages Google Search to find corroborating or contrasting information.

Keeping your data private and secure

At Google for Education, we're committed to providing industry-leading educational technology that fosters a safer digital learning environment. Our robust privacy commitments outline how we protect user data and prioritize privacy, and this extends to our generative AI offerings. Gemini for Google Workspace falls under your Google Workspace for Education Terms of Service. Learn more about how we're safeguarding your Google Workspace data in the age of generative AI.

Gemini's integration into Google Workspace for Education is a game-changer! It's super helpful for brainstorming and creating lesson plans, but sometimes it feels like it's trying to do too much. Still, it's a great tool for educators. Anyone else using it in their classrooms? 📚
