Apple Teams Up with Anthropic to Develop AI Coding Tool for Xcode

Apple and Anthropic Collaborate on AI-Powered Coding Assistant
According to Bloomberg, Apple is developing an advanced AI coding assistant that will integrate directly into Xcode, its flagship development environment. This collaboration with Anthropic will incorporate the Claude Sonnet model to assist developers with writing, refining, and testing their code.
The new tool is currently undergoing internal testing, with Apple yet to finalize plans for a public release. The system reportedly features a conversational interface for developer requests, along with capabilities for UI testing and automated bug resolution. The Verge reached out to Apple for confirmation, but the company hasn't responded to inquiries. Anthropic spokesperson Danielle Ghiglieri also declined to comment when contacted by the publication.
Growing Industry Adoption of AI-Assisted Development
Tech leaders have increasingly highlighted AI's growing role in internal development workflows. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently noted that AI-generated code now accounts for 20-30% of certain projects in their repositories. Meanwhile, OpenAI is reportedly negotiating a potential $3 billion acquisition of coding assistant Windsurf to enhance ChatGPT's programming capabilities.
Apple first previewed their vision for AI-assisted development at WWDC 2024 with Swift Assist, though the tool remains unreleased months after its announcement. This new Xcode integration represents Apple's latest effort to establish stronger footing in the competitive AI space, where it currently trails major competitors.
Apple's Strategic AI Reorganization
The coding assistant initiative comes as Apple works to accelerate its AI strategy following recent setbacks. The company recently delayed its next-generation Siri upgrade, acknowledging development is taking longer than anticipated. Internal reshuffling has seen AI leadership transition from John Giannandrea to Mike Rockwell, previously head of Vision Pro development, signaling a renewed focus on bringing AI products to market.
Updated May 2nd: Anthropic maintained its position of not commenting on the reported collaboration.
