Speaking at the recent G7 summit, Mistral AI CEO Arthur Mensch highlighted France's clear edge in the AI race, thanks to its abundant and low-cost electricity. France has become a major European power producer by building large-scale nuclear plants. Last year, it net exported 92 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity, primarily to Italy, Germany, and Belgium.
Mensch noted that electricity is a key driver of AI development, yet often overlooked in Europe. He stressed that France's power is both stable and affordable, offering strong support for AI companies. France can either sell this electricity at low prices to American AI firms or use its own enterprises to convert it into higher-value Token (token), boosting economic returns.
