While major browser vendors race to integrate AI features, Mozilla takes a different path by putting the choice back in users' hands. Mozilla has officially rolled out the Firefox 148.0 update worldwide. The most notable highlight is an "AI kill switch" that allows users to completely disable all built-in AI experiences from the settings.
AIbase reports that as browsers increasingly embrace "AI-powered" features, many users have been frustrated by overly integrated AI plugins. Firefox 148 introduces a dedicated "AI Control" section in the settings interface, where users can manage various AI-enhanced features or disable them all with a single click. This user-centric, privacy-focused approach makes Firefox stand out in the 2026 browser market.
Beyond strong AI controls, the new version also refines productivity tools. On Windows, the previously reported "image drag and drop" bug has been fixed. Dragging a downloaded image directly from the browser into Adobe Illustrator now correctly inserts the image itself rather than a link. Additionally, the translation feature has been significantly expanded, adding bidirectional translation for Traditional Chinese and support for Vietnamese, further breaking down language barriers while browsing.
Notably, this update marks the end of an era. The concurrently released Firefox 115.33 will be the last security update for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. Starting in February 2026, Mozilla will completely stop maintaining these older systems. For users still relying on outdated devices, upgrading hardware or switching to Windows 10 or later is now imminent.
