EcoDataCenter Secures $500M for Sustainable AI Building Projects

EcoDataCenter (EDC), a Swedish outfit specializing in eco-friendly data centers, has just scooped up a hefty $478 million (€450 million) in equity funding. Why the big bucks? Well, they're gearing up for a surge in demand, especially from major compute providers handling AI workloads.

This cash injection comes from a group of institutional investors who prefer to keep their identities under wraps. EDC plans to use the funds to keep pushing the boundaries of green tech and to build even more sustainable data centers.

Interestingly, this news broke just two days after CoreWeave, one of EDC's key customers and an AI compute giant, announced its IPO filing in the U.S. To date, EDC has raised a whopping €910 million ($966 million) in equity. Areim, the holding company behind EDC, isn't spilling the beans on the company's valuation, and they're definitely not planning to spin out EDC anytime soon.

"We're all about scaling EcoDataCenter and delivering long-term value, thanks to our investors' strong support," said Robert Björk, an investment manager for Areim and a board member at EcoDataCenter. "Sure, we're always looking at strategic opportunities, but an IPO? Not on our radar right now."

EDC's mission is to create co-location data centers where clients can bring their own servers and hardware, all while keeping things sustainable. And boy, is that timely! The International Energy Agency's research shows just how power-hungry these data centers can be, with some consuming enough electricity to power 350,000 to 400,000 electric cars annually. Data centers as a whole gobble up about 1% of global electricity.

In this context, EDC stands out not just for meeting the ever-growing need for compute power, but for doing it in an eco-conscious way that's starting to catch on. "We were the first to use cross-laminated timber for construction," EDC's CEO Peter Michelson proudly stated. "Now even Microsoft is following suit."

EDC doesn't stop there. They power their facilities with renewable energy and are constantly working on new ways to cool and operate more efficiently.

Apart from CoreWeave, EDC's client list includes DeepL and the so-called "hyperscalers." These big players often build their own data centers but also use EDC's co-location spaces to balance their load. EDC's reach extends beyond tech too, with clients like BMW. Plus, they're teaming up with CoreWeave and Nvidia to build Europe's first Blackwell cluster in Falun, Sweden, to boost compute capacity across the continent.

The size of EDC's recent fundraise really underscores how crucial data centers, especially co-location ones that save clients on major capital expenditures, have become in the AI hype cycle. It's a global trend, too. Just look at the U.S., where they've announced the $500 billion Stargate project, backed by OpenAI, SoftBank, and others, to build mega AI data centers. It's still just a plan, but it was announced shortly after Trump took office, signaling a tech-friendly, if not tech-aggressive, administration.

"There's a ton of infrastructure capital pouring into data centers, as they're becoming more tech-oriented real estate," Michelson noted. That real estate angle might just explain why the current administration, and President Trump in particular, with his real estate background, got so excited about their own big data center project.
