Doubao Tests AI-Powered E-Commerce Feature to Convert 220 Million Users
ByteDance's AI assistant, Doubaobao, began a limited beta test of its AI-powered e-commerce feature in March 2026. This move signals a deeper integration of large language model applications into the core transactional processes of online shopping.
The feature is designed around a "one-command shopping" experience. It utilizes Doubaobao's advanced natural language understanding and intent recognition to interpret users' often vague shopping requests. The system then provides precise product matches, generates purchase recommendations, and seamlessly guides users to checkout with a streamlined process. According to QuestMobile data, Doubaobao led the domestic AI-native app market with 226 million monthly active users by the end of 2025. This beta test represents ByteDance's strategic effort to merge its massive user traffic with Douyin E-commerce's supply chain, creating a complete loop from content discovery to transaction completion.

The competition in AI-assisted shopping is now intensifying. Major platforms like Alibaba, JD.com, Meituan, and Pinduoduo have all ramped up investments, achieving significant deployment during the 2026 Spring Festival period. Notably, Alibaba's Tongyi Qianwen, integrated across its ecosystem, facilitated over 120 million AI-generated orders in just six days. Meanwhile, Feizhu's AI order volume saw explosive growth, surging 800% ahead of the holiday.
