Cloudflare CEO Predicts AI Traffic Will Surpass Human Users in Three Years
Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince, speaking at the SXSW conference in Austin, projected that bot-generated internet traffic will surpass human traffic for the first time by 2027. This shift is driven by the rapid advancement of generative AI (GenAI) and its insatiable demand for data.

Prince elaborated that before the GenAI era, bots accounted for roughly 20% of web traffic. This mix included legitimate crawlers, like those from Google, and malicious bots from bad actors. The rise of GenAI is transforming this landscape. An AI agent, tasked with answering a user question like "which digital camera should I buy," might visit thousands of sites, generating traffic volumes up to 1,000 times greater than a human user. While the current growth rate is steadier than the explosive surge seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, it remains consistent and shows no indication of slowing, presenting a challenge all industries must consider.
Prince views AI as a fundamental platform shift, altering how information is retrieved. To adapt, Cloudflare is developing core infrastructure to support these new technologies. Examples include "agent sandboxes," which can be launched, operated, and terminated as easily as opening a new browser tab, specifically for AI agents.
As a provider of infrastructure and security services to one in five websites globally, Cloudflare's offerings—such as its content delivery network (CDN), DDoS protection, always-on caching, and tools to manage AI bot traffic—are designed to help websites remain highly available, load quickly, and defend against attacks.
