A closer look inside AI Mode
Google Search Evolves: Introducing AI Mode for Smarter, More Natural Queries
For decades, Google Search has been the gateway to the internet, helping billions find answers, explore ideas, and discover the world. But search has come a long way from the days of simple "10 blue links." Over the years, we've introduced richer results—images, videos, maps, and more—to make finding information faster and more intuitive.
This year, we took the biggest leap yet: AI Mode, a completely reimagined way to search. Built from the ground up to handle complex, multi-part questions, AI Mode lets you ask naturally—just like you would in conversation—and get clear, AI-powered responses with key details and useful links for deeper exploration.
At Google I/O 2025, we announced that users in the U.S. will soon see an AI Mode tab in Search and a shortcut in the Google app. Ask anything—whether it's planning a trip, comparing products, or diving into a niche topic—and AI Mode delivers structured, easy-to-digest answers. Want to dig deeper? Ask follow-ups, or revisit your search later to pick up right where you left off.
A Mission-Driven Evolution
"No product embodies our mission more than Google Search," said Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, during his I/O keynote. "It’s why we started investing in AI decades ago—so we could deliver its benefits at the scale of human curiosity."
With AI Mode, we're pushing that mission further. "AI Mode redefines how people interact with information," explains Soufi Esmaeilzadeh, Director of Product Management. "Instead of relying on keywords, you can now ask complex questions in plain language, just like you'd naturally speak. It’s about making search feel effortless."
From AI Overviews to AI Mode
The journey to AI Mode began with AI Overviews—AI-generated snapshots that appear at the top of search results when a generative response would be most helpful. But users wanted more:
- Predictability – People loved AI Overviews but didn’t always know when they’d appear.
- Complex Queries – Users were instinctively asking longer, more nuanced questions, like "Find me a kid-friendly vacation spot with a quiet hotel for a family with two infants."
"That got us thinking," says Soufi. "How do we reimagine search for the AI era?"
Designed for Natural Interaction
For 25 years, Google trained users to search with minimal input—a few keywords at most. AI Mode flips that script, encouraging longer, more conversational queries.
"We designed the UI to signal something new," says Claudia Smith, UX Research Director. "The interface invites fluid, back-and-forth interaction—like having a helpful assistant at your fingertips."
Key features include:
✅ Follow-up questions – Keep the conversation going without starting over.
✅ Dynamic responses – Visual cues show when Google is processing complex requests.
✅ Helpful links – Dive deeper with curated sources.
Built with Real User Feedback
Before launching, we tested AI Mode with power users—people who rely heavily on AI for research, planning, and decision-making. Their insights shaped the experience, ensuring it meets real-world needs, from exploratory research to local shopping recommendations.
After refining the experience in Google Labs, AI Mode rolled out to U.S. users in June 2025, with more features coming soon.
The Future of Search
Early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. "Users love that we’re not just finding information, but actively helping them organize and understand it," says Soufi. "This is just the beginning—we’re committed to making search even more intuitive, helpful, and human."
Stay tuned as AI Mode continues to evolve, bringing the power of AI to every search.
