OpenAI has rolled out a significant update to the ChatGPT desktop app, now featuring deep integration with Codex and a new Voice mode driven by the GPT-Live model. This feature empowers users to manage, monitor, and refine tasks via voice across three key domains: casual chat, professional work, and coding, facilitating seamless multi-threaded collaboration.
Full-duplex voice capabilities enable simultaneous speaking and listening, allowing users to work hands-free.
Building on its 2024 introduction of voice recognition, OpenAI has significantly advanced its voice technology with the new GPT-Live model. This update supports full-duplex interaction, meaning the AI can listen and speak at the same time, creating a more natural, human-like dialogue. According to OpenAI, this progress aligns with their long-term AI vision: "We are moving towards our AI vision, and in the future, users will only need to speak their requirements, and ChatGPT will quickly advance multiple tasks based on your thoughts."
With ChatGPT Voice, users can launch multiple workflows from a single conversation while continuing to speak as intelligent agents handle background tasks. For instance, when organizing a business trip, users can instruct ChatGPT to check their calendar for conflicts, scan their inbox for flight updates, and draft meeting notes—all while they prepare coffee or attend to other duties.
