CCTV Exposes AI Dating Scam Targeting Middle-Aged and Older Women, 28 Arrested

Recent reports from CCTV News highlight a new wave of AI-driven dating scams targeting middle-aged and elderly women. Criminals are leveraging AI-generated personas to lure victims into financial fraud. Authorities in Chengdu, Sichuan, recently busted an "AI dating" syndicate, arresting 28 suspects, including Wang. The investigation uncovered losses exceeding one million yuan and impacted more than 50 victims.
The "Two-Act" Scam: AI Imagery Meets Human Sales Tactics
Victim Ms. Bian discovered a matchmaking service on a video platform, where an operator known as "Director Wang of the Matching Center" sent her a profile and photo of a man named "Li Ge." After paying 2,000 yuan for the service, she was unable to establish contact. Police investigations revealed that the matchmaking company was fictitious, with only sales, editing, and hosting staff on site. Forensic analysis of editing computers revealed the same AI-generated male images provided to Ms. Bian.
The syndicate employed AI-generated male avatars for live broadcasts, using pre-written scripts and voice changers to simulate "high-quality men" during interactions. Dedicated after-sales staff then continued the charade with victims, ensuring no real dating ever occurred. Although Wang refunded Ms. Bian, police secured conclusive evidence by monitoring his live broadcast account and arrested him while he was actively using AI images for streaming.
CCTV emphasizes that these fictitious identity scams are prevalent on short video platforms and urges platforms to implement risk classification systems and report fraud leads to authorities. Experts recommend mandatory labeling for AI-generated content, enhanced risk control measures, and algorithmic blocking of suspicious promotions. Meanwhile, users are encouraged to utilize verification tools to detect AI content and strengthen their awareness of online risks.
