ByteDance’s DouBao Seed 2.1 Series Boasts Coding and Agent Capabilities on Par with GPT-5.5
ByteDance quietly introduced the DouBao Seed 2.1 series models on the Volcano Engine official website, featuring Pro and Turbo versions, alongside an updated Seed-Evolving model. These models are officially described as "the next-generation large models designed for the Coding and Agent era," focusing on two primary use cases: complex engineering delivery and large-scale production.

Compared to its predecessor, Seed 2.1 delivers comprehensive upgrades across three areas: coding engineering delivery, long-chain agent task execution, and multimodal understanding. With enhanced autonomous planning and dynamic repair capabilities, it can handle real R&D and high-value production tasks. The company claims these three core capabilities are on par with GPT-5.5.
Pro flagship and Turbo efficient each have their own roles.
The two models have clear positioning. Doubao-seed-2-1-pro is a flagship deep-thinking model that emphasizes strong demand comprehension, long-term planning, and continuous repair capabilities, making it suitable for high-complexity exploration tasks like complex coding, long-chain agents, and multi-step engineering delivery. Doubao-seed-2-1-turbo is a low-cost, low-latency version designed for large-scale production, offering complete features and performance comparable to the Pro variant, ideal for enterprise deployment requiring heavy online calls.
Additionally, Doubao-seed-evolving employs a dynamic iteration mechanism, releasing at least one version update each week. Users can always access the latest version via a unified Model ID, ensuring uninterrupted continuous evolution. There is also a role model, Doubao-seed-character, which has been fully upgraded for general entertainment scenarios, adding capabilities like natural conversation, video understanding, and multimodal sticker recognition, and it supports proactive conversation initiation.
As for pricing, the Pro version costs 6 yuan per million tokens for input and 30 yuan for output; the Turbo version costs 3 yuan per million tokens for input and 15 yuan for output. Compared to the Pro version, the Turbo version's price is cut in half, offering a more competitive cost structure for large-scale calls.
