ARIA bans pure AI songs from charts while allowing human-created and AI-assisted tracks

The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) has banned entirely AI-generated songs from its official charts, with the new policy taking effect next Monday. The decision follows a track that used AI vocals and drum beats to mimic Madonna’s "Like a Prayer," which stayed in Australia’s top 20 for 16 weeks and peaked at number 2, sparking debate over generative AI’s role in music.
Human involvement is now mandatory for chart eligibility
Under the updated rules, only songs primarily created, performed, and produced by humans can enter the charts. Purely AI-generated tracks are also ineligible for ARIA Music Awards, though works using legitimate AI tools for production support remain eligible. This aligns with the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry’s July guideline emphasizing human creation, addressing concerns about streaming platforms using unauthorized training data.
Dr. Weaver, a lecturer at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, called it "a very good step," noting that while avoiding AI entirely is difficult, humans must retain control and make key creative choices. ARIA’s boundary effectively protects human creativity amid the rise of AI.
