Tech reviewer Zack Nelson highlights this flaw in a durability test featured on his JerryRigEverything YouTube channel. He notes that the anodized aluminum coating on these models "doesn’t adhere well to sharp corners," creating a weak spot in the finish. This limitation is inherent to the electrochemical anodizing process, suggesting Apple made a deliberate design trade-off.
"Apple chose not to add a chamfer, fillet, or radius around the camera ledge—likely for aesthetic reasons," Nelson remarks in the video. "That sleek out-of-the-box look, however, may become a long-term annoyance for owners." The footage confirms that common items like coins or keys carried alongside the phone can chip the anodized layer near these crisp edges. In contrast, similar contact with the flat surface of the camera housing only leaves removable dust marks.
